If my hubby paid taxes all year and changed his w4 to exempt for 3 months will we have to pay in?

  • Whether you have to pay or not depends on what he was claiming the rest of the year. But claiming exempt when you are not is illegal. He'd be better if he claimed some high number of allowances, maybe 10 or 12, so they wouldn't take anything out.

  • Your federal taxes on your W2 are based on the total wages you made throughout the year. You can easily figure what amount of taxes you need to pay based on your yearly salary. The IRS have a withholding calc you can use to est your yearly taxes. You can find it at

    http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0...

You will need a pay stub and last years tax return. But I find it is a pretty good tool to use to est the amount of tax you will owe or have to pay in.

  • The "exempt" status on the W-4 is only valid if a) you didn't pay tax last year and b) you didn't expect to pay tax this year.

This could easily be true if your family's income was low enough.

As for whether you will get a large refund or not, not enough info. if you owe, then he lied when he claimed exempt and he shouldn't do it at all next year.
