How can I drill a hole in a beer bottle?

  • Hi there.. I have been trying to drill a hole in a glass bottle but failed 3 times in a row,.. I am now using a £20 wireless drill with a rolson £9 drill bit from b and q... everytime i drill the bottle, it gets a fair hole but soon as i drill more the bottle bassicly explodes and shatters.... do i need something better than my setup or am i doing it wrong? the hole needs to be roughly 0.8cm thanks


  • Is the hole for a copper tube?
    The best way to get a tube into glass without any problems whatsoever and they way I have been doing it for years installing brackets into bathroom mirrors and copper pipes into bong bottles.

    1. Get yourself a tin of Valve Grinding Paste (Auto stores sell it)
    2. Put the paste all over the the pipe end you want to go through the bottle.
    3. Smear more on the bottle were you want the pipe to go through.
    4. Stick the pipe into your drill. The easiest way is to jam a bolt into the pipe end then slip a socket over the bolt.
    5. Make sure you use a slow speed and don't heat up the glass too much. If you generate too much heat the glass will most likely shatter.
    6. Take your time and keep applying the valve paste and you will have a perfect hole that is 1/32 of an inch bigger than the pipe. An almost perfect fit.

  • Get a drill bit which is diamond tipped.


  • Seem to remember you fill the bottle with sand prior to drilling???


  • , Use the fastest speed you have, and the least pressure,so that the drill bit will not split the glass as it emerges, and of course,do not use a hammer drill. Finally, get the very best drill bit you can afford.


  • The best way iv found to drill a hole in a bottle is by using a dart and then you just tap the hole out this way does take a bit of time to do but iv never shattered a bottle doing it this way


  • To be sure that you will be successful, get a glass drill bit, they are shaped like a spear point and are not expensive, put some masking tape or similar where you want the hole to be, then put a small ring of putty or Plasticine around the where you want the hole to be and put some oil in the ring, any oil will do even cooking oil, take your time and don't lean too heavy on the drill and use a slower speed than you would use for normal drilling, especially when you are just about through.
    If you do it this way you will get a nice clean hole with no chipped edges


  • Well dummy. If you just open the cap on the bottle you'll already have a hole. Then you wont need to drill one. Think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


  • cover the spot of the bottle you want to drill with masking tape when you are near to the other side of the bottle do not apply any pressure on the drill let the drill bit do the work.better if you have the drill running at a high speed near the end use a tile drilling bit they are not that expensive
