How do I add a focal point with 20 foot ceilings above my fireplace?

  • I have a boring 5 foot wide firplace with 20 foot high ceilings in the family room. It separates the family room from the living room. The chimney part of it (4 feet above the fireplace) is only 3 1/2 feet wide all the way to the ceiling. My decor is rustic reds and dark yellow in the kitchen (the joining room). I have a brown sofa and redish, tan, sand color stripe curtains on the slider(opposing wall of fireplace). The entire room is painted a sand color, warm but bright. I'm thinking about painting it a deep red (almost merlot) and adding a manlte. Is this a good idea?

  • A dramatic feature is to add a tier of molding strips in squares. Stand alone they look great but you can use them to "frame" pieces of art as well. I would definitely add a mantel.

  • I believe what you are thinking is headed in the right direction. My first thought was mantel and something above that. Painting, picture, something you enjoy in your life. Nature.,fall, winter, spring or summer, something that will draw you to it. Sounds pretty. Enjoy

  • You need an unusual colorful art work or painting for that space!

  • What comes to my mind is various welded sculptures I have seen over the years. Here is a link to an artist in my area that will give you an idea of what I mean. The ones on this site are mostly free standing, but she could modify them for a wall hanging if you don't have a mantle that it could rest on. Something the size you would need would probably also need to be secured to the wall. I have seen others with different colors of metal or some that are partially rusted. The latter may go well with your decor.
